5 Major Health Benefits of Kombucha

More than a trendy drink, kombucha tea has a list of potential benefits.

What is Kombucha?

Fizzy tea, essentially.

Kombucha is a combination of tea, sugar, yeast and bacteria that’s fermented. This process creates natural soda-like bubbles and probiotic properties.

It’s been around for thousands of years, but kombucha recently became trendy because of a long list of possible health benefits.

5 Major Health Benefits

1. Aids digestion & boosts immunity.

Kombucha is rich in probiotic bacteria from fermentation. Recent studies prove there’s a link between probiotic bacteria and overall strengthening of the immune system.

2. Contains antioxidants.

Regular green and black tea is filled with antioxidants, but the fermentation process to make kombucha boosts those levels even more.

Other active compounds found in kombucha include amino acids, vitamins B2, B6, & C, lactic acid, and active enzymes.

3. May prevent infection.

Acetic acid (stuff found in vinegar) helps kill microbes. Kombucha may prevent infections by killing off bad bacteria before they can be absorbed by the body.

4. Potential disease-fighting effects.

None have been proven, but there’s evidence kombucha helps fight or manage a variety of diseases, including:

  • type 2 diabetes (1, 2)
  • reducing liver toxicity levels (3, 4)
  • reducing cholesterol linked to heart disease (5, 6, 7)
  • may help prevent certain cancers (11, 12, 13)

5. Aids in healthy weight loss.

Studies show green tea aids weight loss by increasing the amount of calories you burn in a day. When made with green tea, kombucha can do the same.

Plus, it’s a healthy alternative to soda thanks to it’s fizzy taste.
